Operations Unit
Units
Units view
The Units view displays the units that exist at the current scope level. You can create a filter to limit the data displayed, such as displaying only the import units, and you can double-click a unit to display the Unit Inspector (on page 1) for the selected unit. There is a significant amount of information associated with the unit entity, more than can be displayed on one screen. For instructions on setting up the Units view to meet your needs, see Hiding and displaying columns and Reordering columns.
In addition, you can access most of the Unit commands from the Actions menu. Because of the large number of options in the Actions menu, they have been grouped into the following categories:
Update: Includes options such as Holds/Permissions, Damages, and Seals.
View: Includes the Scan Yard Position option (on page 1).
Reefer: Includes options such as Update Reefer Requirements, Update Reefer On-Power Status, and Record Reefer Readings.
Transactions: Includes options such as Record Service, Assign Booking/Rail Order, and Strip.
Administration: Includes options such as Refresh Unit, Depart Unit, and Delete Unit.
Prerequisites
N4 creates the parent action menu groups (for example, Update, View, Reefer, Transaction, and Administration) only if there are any sub-menu actions that the logged-in user can access.
If you choose Select Action from the Actions menu, you can type in or select the action you want to perform. For example, if you want to update the damages associated with the unit, type Damages and press Enter. Similarly, if you have the Units - Keyboard Shortcut privilege, you can type Ctrl-S to access the Select Action option.
N4 enables you to restrict the number of units displayed in the Units view. This allows you to open the view and search specific records faster. Use the horizon days feature to specify the number of days in the past for which N4 displays historical data in the Units view. For more information, see Behaviors tab in the User Preferences form.
Bundled units
You can identify if a unit is bundled or not by enabling the Bundle column available in 2-Equipment group of the Units view. You must manually refresh the Units view to see the change to the status after you bundle or unbundle a unit.
Rail, Road, and Vessel Impediments
To ensure that you are viewing the latest impediment values in the Impediments:Vessel, Impediments:Road, and Impediments:Rail columns, you can force N4 to recalculate and update these values by selecting the unit(s) in the Units view and then the Actions Administration
Refresh Unit option.
In the Units view, the following columns display the holds/permissions information for a unit:
Unit Hold/Perm: GRANTED permissions and ACTIVE holds for the unit only.
The holds/permissions displayed in this column may or may not prevent an event for the unit. For more information, see Hold/Permission Details form (on page 1).
Unit Granted Hold/Perm: GRANTED permissions and RELEASED holds for the unit. The behavior of the Unit Granted Hold/Perm field changes as per the following scenarios:
If there are no holds released or permissions granted, this field is blank.
If a hold is applied and later released, this field displays the released hold.
If a permission is granted, this field displays the granted permission.
If both a hold and a permission are related to a unit, this field displays the released hold and granted permission separated by a comma.
If the same hold is re-applied, this field does not display the previously released hold as that hold is now active.
If a permission is canceled, the field does not display the previously granted permission because the permission is now required.
Unit Impediments: REQUIRED permissions and ACTIVE holds that prevent any unit event.
This includes holds/permission on a guardian of a unit, such as a hold on an export booking that prevents a UNIT_LOAD event for all units associated with the export booking.
Unit Impediments Groups: The holds/permissions groups assigned to any of the applicable unit impediments.
Impediments:Vessel: REQUIRED permissions and ACTIVE holds that prevent a UNIT_LOAD event.
Impediments:Road: REQUIRED permissions and ACTIVE holds that prevent a UNIT_DELIVER event.
Impediments:Rail: REQUIRED permissions and ACTIVE holds that prevent a UNIT_RAMP event.
The Impediments:Vessel, Impediments:Road, and Impediments:Rail columns display the value stored in the database. N4 uses the unit maintenance background job to calculate and update the values in the database. You can specify the frequency and batch size for this background job. The refresh-units job depends on these configuration settings: INVREFRESH001 (RFRSH_FREQ), INVREFRESH002 (RFRSH_BATCH), INVREFRESH003 (RFRSH_STALE), INVREFRESH004 (RFRSH_UNIT_NUMBER), and INVREFRESH005 (RFRSH_THREAD_NUMBER).
SLOW Load Impediment, SLOW Delivery Impediment, and SLOW Rail Impediment: Same as the Impediments:Vessel, Impediments:Road, and Impediments:Rail columns except that when displayed in the Units view N4 calculates these impediments for the units displayed in the list view.
You cannot sort, search, or filter data in these columns. In addition, when you refresh the Units view, N4 recalculates all of the impediments for these columns.
In all the Impediments columns, the REQUIRED permissions are preceded by an !. When an impediment exists for a unit, N4 displays a period in the corresponding Stop column. For example, if a vessel impediment exists, N4 displays a period in the Stop-Vsl column. If a gate impediment exists for a unit, N4 displays a period in the Stop-Road column. Similarly, for a rail impediment, N4 displays a period in the Stop-Rail column.
N4 does not display the RELEASED holds in the Units view. To view the RELEASED holds, use the Unit Inspector Holds/Permissions tab (on page 1).
Position of a unit
If a unit is Active, the Position column displays the current real-time position of the unit. If a unit is Departed, the Position column displays the position of the unit on the outbound carrier, such as vessel, barge, train, or truck that took the unit away from the facility that handled it last. In other words, the Position column displays the last known position of a unit from the perspective of the facility.
Door Direction
The door direction of a unit is a computed field that serves information purposes only. SNX Export includes the Position field, which is an actual field that a third party can use for computations; it does not include the Door Direction field. When N4 receives Orientation information along with the Position information via SNX Import, it uses this field to compute the door direction.
List Selected
Prerequisites
You must have the Units - My List (UNITS_MY_LIST) privilege to access this action.
Sometimes, you may want to view a subset of units listed in the Units view. You can select the units that you want to view and select the Actions List Selected option (on page 1) to create another view that displays only the selected units. N4 creates a new tab with only the selected units and specifies the name of the tab as Selected@HH:MM:ss, where HH:MM:ss is the time when you created the list view. The Actions and Display menus in this view provides the same options as the parent view, including custom actions that you may have implemented. N4 does not save the List Selected views. If you close the tab or quit N4, you must create the selected list again. If you want a more permanent subset of units that you want to monitor, you must use the Units: My List view (on page 1).
Notes
When you use an Actions menu option to update a unit, N4 automatically refreshes the data displayed in the Units view and the Unit Inspector. To view the updates performed by other users or XPS, click in the Units view or the Unit Inspector.
You can use the Unit Applied Holds/Permissions column in a filter in the Units view. However, it may cause performance issues and may make N4 very slow because Unit Applied Holds/Permissions is not a database field and uses the reflection process to retrieve the data.
Depending on the number of units displayed in the Units view, if you display a SLOW impediment column, N4 may take some time to calculate and display the impediments.
When you post the EDI 309 Manifest Delete message, if the existing unit that is attached to the bill of lading is in the Active/Inbound state, N4 updates the T-state and V-state of the unit to Advised/Advised. Also, N4 updates the O/B Actual Visit to GEN_VESSEL if the unit is an Export and the I/B Actual Visit to GEN_VESSEL if the unit is an Import or Transship.
When you create a domestic booking for a unit with the agent details and use the Barge Stow Plan form to pre-advise the unit, N4 updates the agent details from the booking to the Agent One field of the unit and displays the same in the Units view.
Due to the large number of columns available in the list view and due to Oracle database limitations, N4 displays an error message if you try to select all the columns in the list view when using Oracle as the database for your site.
If your query is hanging or running slowly, you may need to remove calculated columns, which include any column that is not sortable (that is, not marked under the Sortable? column).
